TOP STORY - IRAN ELECTIONS
1. How are the 3 Iranian presidential candidates similar? Who is
currently the front runner in this election? What group of
Iranians constitute his strongest opposition? Why?
2. What evidence of social change does one see on the streets of
Tehran? What measures have Iran's reformers taken to
strengthen their country's economy? Why is Western investment
so important to Iran?
3. In groups have students research the effects of the Iran/Iraq
War on Iran, then share their information. How has Iran
changed since the war? In what ways is Iran still recovering?
In light of the political and economic consequences of that
war, discuss what a candidate for president of Iran should do
or say to win the support of the electorate.
4. Divide the class into 3 groups to research the role of Islam in
Iran's (a) political system, (b) economy or (c) society. Have
each group report its findings to the class. Generate a class
discussion about the comparatively lesser influence of religion
in the political, economic and social affairs of most Western
countries. If Iranians adopt more Western ways as they attempt
to secure technology and investment, do you think that Islam
will become LESS or MORE influential in Iranian life? Discuss.
5. If you were an Iranian Foreign Minister, how might you attempt
to attract Western technology and investment to your country?
Have groups of students find out more about Iran's natural
resources and potential for economic growth. Then have each
group design a PR campaign to attract international capital to
Iran. Groups should present their campaign "scripts" to the
class. When all presentations are complete, ask the groups to
describe the problems Iran will have to overcome in order to
secure outside investment and technology.
THE RICHEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD
6. How might your life be different if YOU were one of the
"world's richest people"? Ask students to imagine that they
have earned enough money to place them in that elite category.
Then have each student write an imaginary episode of
"Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" that profiles him/her as
the World's "Newest" Billionaire. Where would you live? On
what would you spend your money? Would you choose to help any
particular cause or group of people? After students have
shared their "episodes," have them discuss the negatives that
might be associated with their new "status."
OUR WORLD: STUDENT FILM
7. What technique did the student producers of "Basic Training"
use to create the illusion of movement? How does this
technique work? Why does it require a great deal of patience?

***** ****** ***** * ***** * * ***** DESK: ELEVATING WORK
1. PREVIEWING: Name some jobs that are no longer performed. What
occupations strike you as "old-fashioned" now? Why?
2. AFTER VIEWING: Why is the elevator in the video described as a
"dinosaur"? What effect has new technology had on the workers
in the video? What alternatives do people have when their jobs
are eliminated by developments in technology? Describe some
ways that technological innovations benefit workers.
3. Operating an elevator is considered a "service occupation."
Ask students to define "service occupation" in their own words.
Lead a discussion of students' definitions, then ask them to
name other service occupations. Of those named, poll students
on the service occupations they regularly encounter or from
whom their parents solicit business. Have students identify
any of these that they feel are in danger of becoming obsolete.
Then have students search the classified section of their local
newspaper to identify other, threatened jobs. Have students:
(a) find out the local agency responsible for assisting
displaced workers,
(b) describe trends, get figures on local job displacement and
(c) learn the kinds of re-training offered.
Challenge students to offer additional suggestions for
alternative job training for displaced employees.
4. Some people are unnerved by the sound of moving machinery;
others write songs in celebration. Describe the sounds
associated with the elevators in the video, then compare with
the sounds of more modern elevators. Poll students about their
preference and ask them to explain. Discuss other "machine
sounds" that elicit similar responses in students. If they
could substitute a different sound, what would it be? Explain.
5. Have fun with the concepts "up" and "down." Have students
brainstorm things that go up and down (e.g., the sun, the
temperature, a dieter's weight, etc.). List these and invite
students to write silly verse, limericks, mock odes or tongue
twisters using one of these images. Enlist the talents of the
class artists as illustrators of the written work and bind into
a volume entitled "Life's Little UPS and DOWNS." Give your
media center a copy.

DIRECTIONS: Many television networks supplement their standard news
programming with "news magazines" that present "in-depth" features
on current issues. Assume you are a co-producer of such a show.
Work with a group of classmates to rank items in order of priority
from this week's news events. REMEMBER: You have a limited budget,
only 15 minutes air time and you have a "deadline." Develop the
event designated as MOST IMPORTANT into a comprehensive report to
serve as your TOP STORY. Choose any other topic from the list as
your FEATURE STORY and focus your coverage so that you capture your
audience's interest and hearts.
